74-Year-Old Bicyclist Hurt in Crash on India Street [San Diego, CA]
Mechanics Rescue Elderly Bicyclist After Accident at Chalmers Street
SAN DIEGO, CA (April 17, 2020) – Good Samaritans helped rescue a 74-year-old bicyclist following a crash on India Street on Friday morning.
Fire officials said the incident happened at about 11:20 a.m. The man was riding his bike off a sidewalk when he was hit by a Subaru Outback that was turning right from Chalmers Street onto India Street.
The cyclist got dragged by the Subaru while being entangled in his bicycle underneath the vehicle.
Mechanics from a nearby motorcycle shop heard the crash and immediately sprung into action while firefighters and paramedics were on their way to the scene. The mechanics used a jack to partially lift the Subaru off the man.
When the firefighters arrived, they used blocks of wood and airbags to lift the Subaru. They were able to free the pinned cyclist in about 10 minutes after arriving at the scene.
Medics then transported the man to a hospital with major but non-life-threatening injuries. These include fractures of his pelvis, ribs, and left arm.
Meanwhile, there was no immediate information as to whether the 38-year-old woman driving the Subaru sustained injuries. The San Diego Police Department’s traffic division was investigating the crash.
