Man Struck, Killed by Semi-Truck at 9th and D Streets [Modesto, CA]
Man Killed in Modesto Pedestrian Accident
MODESTO, CA (March 26, 2020) — A man lost his life following a pedestrian accident that involved a big rig Tuesday morning at 9th and D streets.
The fatal collision happened around 11:40 a.m. near the Salvation Army store.
According to witnesses, a big rig was traveling southwest on D Street. As its driver attempted a right turn onto 9th Street, the pedestrian, for unknown reasons, began walking southbound in the crosswalk. However, it appeared that the man tried stepping over the hitch that connects the two trailers of the big rig together.
Sgt. Lance Nicolai said the man tried stepping over the hitch, appearing in no hurry, as the big rig was moving.
Subsequently, the second trailer’s right-hand wheel ran over the man. Witnesses responded immediately by flagging down a nearby officer. From there, multiple 911 calls poured in from witnesses indicating that the big rig driver kept driving.
Another witness who followed the driver reported the driver’s location to police, who, shortly after, pulled the driver over. It seemed that the driver had not been aware of the crash at the time, but the police took investigations and questioning back to the scene for further examination.
At this time, the liabilities have not been addressed, but authorities plan to investigate.
As for the victim, the coroner’s office has him identified, but are withholding his name until the next of kin has been notified.
